In my earlier blogs, it has been noted that Facebook has been having trouble with fake news. Last month it was revealed that the Russians have spent about $100,000 on false advertising on social media during the 2016 election. Facebook has been trying to put guidelines on advertising. But according to The Guardian has failed in trying to stop fake news. It states in the article that Facebook has become more of a PR campaign. The CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg tried to stop the fake news by partnering up with a partner with Poynter's International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) to have an eye on their advertising to see if they were real or not. Facebook has been posting warning banners about the fake news but no actual evidence of them. In the article the author states, ""Fact checkers said they had queries about how often the tags were placed on articles, what effect they had on the content and what sites were most often targeted -- but said that Facebook had not provided information," reports The Guardian. (Krishna, 2017) Reports recently are stating that Facebook has been trying to get out of false news advertising and posting, but it seems as if the company is losing the battle.

This post provided excellent insight into the issue of fake news and the internet, particularly as it pertains to social media. So many are getting their news from social media platforms, and unfortunately, sites such as Facebook simply aren't doing enough. Fake news is spreading like a sickness, and Facebook seems to be the largest source of the "outbreak". Great post!
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt in my mind that fake news needs to be stopped but how is this supposed to happen? How do you detect when an article is real and when it is false. Do you have people read every single article and verify it, probably not. I don't think an algorithm would have the capability to do this either. The main reason why I think it is so difficult to stop is the quantity of fake news that is going around at one time. I also think that fake news is getting more real looking which is also making it difficult to differentiate from real and fake.
ReplyDeleteHi Abby,
ReplyDeleteFake news is a popular topic today and a should be a concern. I have been keeping up with the fake news story regarding Facebook, but was unaware that the Russians spent about $100,000 on false advertising on social media during the 2016 election. Your blog was interesting and insightful about the problems about fake news in politics.
Great blog!
Hey Abby! It is quite beneficial that Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook has partnered up to put a stop to fake news. So many people today get their news off of facebooK --so it's important to put a stop to fake news before it can spread.
